“WHAT IS IT YOU’RE FEELING RIGHT NOW?”
It’s a question I ask myself often these days, constantly looking for the answer.
As a boy, I never really explored my emotions. No one really taught me how to. My education on the topic usually was summed up to “Man Up” or “Big boys don’t cry.” Sadly, It’s an upbringing a lot of boys and men are familiar with.
I’ll be honest. In my opinion, strength, grit and emotional resilience are all important qualities for men to have. However, we can’t expect to bottle up every passing emotion and deal with it alone. There is value in understanding our emotions and learning how to express them. It’s the beginning of forming meaningful relationships and allowing those closest to us to understand us better.
After all, if we don’t understand ourselves, how can we expect someone else to?
In this Episode of The Modern Man, we sit down with Darian Blue A Pastor, father, and husband who was raised by a single father. Growing up surrounded by strong male influences, Darian had to literally learn how to show love and affection to those closest to him.
Darian, Tyler, Charles and myself explore what emotion in men looks like and why we generally have a hard time sharing them. We also discuss some ways we can understand and maybe even start to express those emotions better.
A great book on this topic I would like to recommend is The Mask Of Masculinity by Lewis Howes. It’s a great exploration of how men tend to fall into typical roles in order to cover up some underlying feelings.
